With the launch of the bilateral flagship project PASSAT, Austrian and German companies are receiving targeted support in implementing the Digital Product Passport (DPP). This innovative approach promotes sustainable growth through a circular economy and optimized production processes. By providing reliable product data along the entire life cycle, the DPP enables the reduction of waste, extended product use and the development of new business models. The AIT Austrian Institute of Technology is the project coordinator and contributes its expertise in the creation of data rooms and standardisation aspects to the project.
ASSAT develops practical solutions, regulatory recommendations and training materials to prepare companies specifically for the challenges of digital transformation. Pilot projects are also being implemented in the textiles, electronics and ski industries. In close cooperation with industry, research and political stakeholders, the project creates the basis for a broad introduction of DPPs in Austria and supports companies in adapting to upcoming regulatory requirements.
The ecological transition requires precise and reliable product data over the entire life cycle of a product. The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is part of the new Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and must be made available for many products placed on the European market in the coming years. The DPP will provide the basis for the collection and use of important product data, which will help to reduce waste, extend the life of products and develop sustainable business models.
PASSAT supports companies in meeting these requirements and actively promoting the circular economy. In addition, PASSAT will develop regulatory and policy recommendations and define technical building blocks and processes to simplify the implementation of the DPP, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The AIT Austrian Institute of Technology acts as project coordinator, contributes its expertise in the creation of data spaces and standardization aspects to the project and links PASSAT with existing initiatives in the context of the Cyber Resilience Act. The consortium is made up of the following renowned partners: AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, ABC Research, Atomic Austria, CANCOM Austria, University for Continuing Education Krems, eaw Relaistechnik, Fraunhofer Austria Research, Grabher Group, GS1 Austria, HTW Berlin, Plattform Industrie 4.0 Österreich, Joanneum Research, Löffler, onlim, Salzburg Research, Secontrade, silana, nexyo, V-Trion GmbH, Wintersteiger Sports.
By integrating the Digital Product Passport into trustworthy, distributed European data space concepts such as Gaia-X, interoperability and data sovereignty are guaranteed, while at the same time maintaining control over sensitive data. Against this backdrop, the Gaia-X Hub Austria is helping to disseminate the project results and make their benefits tangible and applicable for the Austrian economy. PASSAT thus provides decisive impetus for a sustainable and secure digital transformation of Austrian industry and supports companies on their way to a sustainable, resource-conserving economy.
