Project „A Mimeo Archaeology” explores the hidden history of Mimeography

Teaching materials, activist leaflets, artists’ publications, and administrative documents were once frequently reproduced using mimeography – a now largely forgotten stencil-based process that was widely used in education, administration, art, and activism. As a previously underexplored part of Austria’s cultural heritage, these materials are now at the centre of the research project “A Mimeo Archaeology” (AMA).

The project combines questions from the humanities with state-of-the-art technological methods. Together with the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna,  the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology is developing AI-supported methods to identify, document, and preserve mimeographed documents over the long term. By bringing together media archaeology, heritage science, artistic research, and machine learning, AMA is creating new methodological approaches for the study and preservation of these materials.
