'SemanticSugarBeets', an AI-based method for the automated quality assessment of sugar beets that is available to the public, is being presented by researchers at the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology. This method is based on a newly developed image dataset combined with a two-stage analysis process. This allows key parameters such as damage, dirt and mass to be assessed reliably.

The system opens up new possibilities for the objective and scalable determination of quality and more precise estimation of sugar yield, in both agriculture and processing. It enables resources to be used more efficiently throughout the entire value chain.

The funded research project 'WattsOK?' has been launched. This innovative project uses artificial intelligence, optical inspection and robotics to automate quality testing of used photovoltaic modules. The system uses the test results to make decisions about reuse or recycling, with the aim of maximising the service life of the modules while increasing the photovoltaic sector's resource efficiency and sustainability.

Building on a successful pilot project within the EDIH AI5Production framework, the project is being implemented by the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology in cooperation with several industry partners.

Together with KLAXON MOBILITY GmbH, a research team from the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology has developed an autonomous wheelchair solution that offers passengers with limited mobility a new level of independence and safety, while at the same time making airport processes significantly more efficient. In an initial test run under real conditions, the wheelchair impressed passengers and airport operators as well as the scientific community.

With TimberVision, AIT presents the world's largest publicly available image data set for AI-supported tree trunk recognition. The system recognises and measures tree trunks precisely - even under challenging environmental conditions - and thus creates the basis for the use of autonomous forestry machines. By providing free access to data sets and algorithms for research and development worldwide, AIT is promoting the digital transformation in forestry.
