Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death worldwide. High blood pressure is a major contributing factor: hypertension accelerates vascular damage and increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, heart failure and kidney disease – yet it often progresses over many years without any noticeable symptoms. Early detection and effective treatment of high blood pressure are therefore crucial steps towards reducing the global burden of cardiovascular disease and improving long-term health outcomes.

To this end, the BPRelax system has been developed at the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology. The method can complement blood pressure management and help to positively influence blood pressure through a specific breathing exercise combined with biofeedback. It is not a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment; in particular, any existing medication should only be altered after consultation with the treating doctor.

Innovative measurement of pulse waves

Studies have shown that this innovative method produces a reproducible and sustained reduction in systolic blood pressure to the same extent as blood pressure medication. The research behind it has been recognised with scientific awards, including the Paul Dudley White International Scholar Award from the American Heart Association and awards from the German Hypertension League. The BPRelax system consists of a compact measuring device, which is somewhat reminiscent of a small games controller, and a medical app that processes the signals and provides the user with real-time feedback on the effectiveness of the breathing exercise. This enhances the positive effects.

Technically speaking, biofeedback is based on an innovative method of measuring pulse wave velocity and transit time, known as ARCSolver. This established technology for analysing pulse waves and calculating key cardiovascular parameters has recently been extended to include not only biofeedback but also ultrasound measurement of the carotid artery. The measuring device is certified as a medical device; the medical app is currently being optimised and is also undergoing certification. Certification as a medical device facilitates integration for partners, accelerates market launch and lays the foundation for continuous further development, thereby strengthening the ARCSolver’s leading position in the field of cardiovascular risk assessment. Together with its partner company GO Europe GmbH, AIT is producing an initial batch of 3,000 devices for distribution in the DACH region.

AIT connects science and innovation

The ability to rapidly translate new findings into marketable technologies and practical solutions is increasingly becoming a key competitive factor for Europe. At this interface between science, technology and application, applied research at the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology plays a central role. Austria’s largest research and technology organisation aligns its research closely with the needs of industry and current societal challenges. AIT’s research makes a difference and creates solutions – for businesses, society and, ultimately, for us all.

AIT Impact Report

The AIT Impact Report 2026 uses around 30 examples to illustrate how AIT, together with partners from industry, academia and the public sector, translates research into concrete solutions. The projects presented range from the digitalisation of industrial processes, through resilient infrastructure and sustainable energy and industrial systems, to health, mobility, security and the circular economy.

About the AIT

The AIT Austrian Institute of Technology is Austria's largest research and technology organisation with more than 1,600 employees working on the key infrastructure issues of the future. The AIT focuses on the two interlinked research priorities of "sustainable and resilient infrastructures", particularly in the areas of energy, transport and health, and the "digital transformation of industry and society", working closely with industry and clients from public institutions. Research & development is the central driver of innovation for industry, the economy and society, secures jobs and prosperity and thus strengthens Austria as a business location.
