Release from
The AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, in collaboration with the Steiermärkische Krankenanstaltengesellschaft (KAGes), MedUniGraz and its spin-off telbiomed, is developing OnkoMobil, a digital solution for structured oncological follow-up care. Breast cancer has been prioritized as the first area of application. The web-based application supports patients and clinical teams in Styria with clearly defined follow-up steps, consolidated information, and secure digital communication channels.
Oncological follow-up care extends over many years and involves numerous disciplines within a hospital. At LKH-Univ. Klinikum Graz, for example, several outpatient clinics and different professional groups are involved, including physicians, nursing staff, and psycho-oncologists. In general, oncological follow-up care predominantly takes place in hospitals. However, certain examinations are particularly well suited to being carried out closer to patients’ homes. OnkoMobil is being developed to enable patients to be guided digitally and securely through their follow-up care and to attend appointments outside the hospital while maintaining consistent quality standards.
“With OnkoMobil, follow-up care is organized in a patient-centered and digital way. A guideline-compliant treatment pathway for breast cancer patients, transparent processes for all stakeholders, reliable data, and the possibility of teleconsultations with hospital-based experts complement the offering. All of this—and much more—is being implemented with OnkoMobil in collaboration with KAGes, MedUniGraz, and telbiomed,” explains Angelika Rzepka, Digital Health Expert at AIT.
A Building Block in AIT’s Digital Health Portfolio
OnkoMobil is part of AIT’s Digital Health portfolio, which focuses on the digitalization of medical treatment pathways. Proven, modular components are used, including secure access, structured longitudinal documentation, and integrated video support. The goal is to standardize and scale processes in order to relieve clinical teams and provide patients with reliable, local follow-up care.
The solution builds on AIT’s many years of experience with modular digital health systems for integrated care, including the flexible KIOLA framework, which is also used in cardiology for HerzMobil.
Outlook: Scalable Digital Care Pathways
OnkoMobil represents a real-world application of a Digital Health platform designed to support care pathways with networked care and active patient participation. In the future, and in coordination with clinical partners and in compliance with regulatory requirements, diagnostic data, biomarkers, as well as validated analyses of vital and biosignals may also be integrated. This will create an indication-specific, scalable follow-up platform without disruptions in the flow of information.
With the gradual rollout of OnkoMobil, travel distances and waiting times are expected to decrease, documentation and decision-making processes to become more transparent, and collaboration between intra- and extramural care providers to improve. The model can be transferred to other tumor entities and chronic diseases and integrates seamlessly into the existing Digital Health landscape of Styria.
