Minister Hanke: “AIT is committed to encouraging more women to enter applied research”

International Day of Women and Girls in Science

Despite positive developments, women continue to be underrepresented in many areas of science and applied research – particularly in technical disciplines and in leadership positions. On the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11, initiated by the United Nations, the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology reaffirms its commitment to greater diversity and inclusion in research and technology. As Austria's largest non-university research institution, AIT is taking targeted measures to inspire girls and women to pursue careers in STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), attract them to AIT, and open up sustainable development prospects for them.

“Equal opportunities in science and technology are a key factor for the future viability of our innovation and research location. The AIT's commitment to diversity, promoting talent, and strengthening STEM skills is therefore particularly important. Only by investing specifically in all potential can we combine social progress and economic strength,” says Innovation Minister Peter Hanke.

"Studies show that diverse teams and a higher proportion of women increase the innovative strength, productivity, and profitability of companies. Diverse teams make informed decisions, communicate more effectively, resolve conflicts better, and work more creatively. More consistent efforts are needed to break down structural barriers and attract girls and women to STEM careers at an early stage and retain them in the long term. Research thrives on diversity, curiosity, and different perspectives,“ emphasizes Brigitte Bach, Managing Director and Spokesperson for the Management Board of the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology and President of Forschung Austria. ”At AIT, we are specifically creating a program along the employee life cycle that promotes scientific excellence, individual development, and the compatibility of career and life realities."

Diversity inspires ideas

AIT focuses on concrete measures to promote women throughout their entire career pipeline – from internships, theses, and PhD programs to transparent career paths and leadership positions. An institutionally anchored gender equality plan, flexible working models, and a culture of appreciation and diversity form the basis for this.

With its clear commitment to equality, diversity, and empowerment, AIT not only contributes to individual career advancement, but also strengthens the innovative power and competitiveness of Austria as a center of research and business.
