The four-day conference is one of the world's leading platforms for interdisciplinary exchange in the fields of cybernetics, human-machine interaction, and systems science and engineering. The AIT Austrian Institute of Technology – together with Óbuda University (Budapest) – is an organisational partner and plays a key role in the scientific and strategic design of the conference. With over 2,100 submissions from around 60 countries, the conference in Vienna sets a new record in the history of IEEE SMC, which has been held annually at different international locations since 1971.

Andreas Kugi, Scientific Director of the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology:
"The question of how humans and technology can best interact in complex systems is one of the key tasks for science, industry and society. AIT has been conducting intensive research at this interface for years. As a leading research institute, we consider it a special opportunity and honour to actively shape the IEEE SMC 2025 as a partner with our contribution."

Thomas Strasser, Chairman of the Organising Committee and Senior Scientist at the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology:
"With more than 2,100 submissions from over 60 countries, IEEE SMC 2025 in Vienna is setting new standards. This overwhelming response not only highlights the enormous international appeal of the conference, but also the relevance of cybernetics, human-machine interaction and systems science for our future. For AIT, it is both a special honour and responsibility to take the lead in organising this world-leading conference together with Óbuda University."

Impulses from leading international researchers
The three opening presentations set a strong tone: Dimitar Filev (Ford Research & Advanced Engineering / Texas A&M University) demonstrated the potential of artificial intelligence for automotive engineering, Peng Shi (University of Adelaide) presented new approaches for AI-supported cyber-physical systems, and John Krumm (University of Southern California) warned of the risks of unprotected location data. Together, the keynotes provided an impressive overview of current research issues at the interface between humans, machines and society.

About the IEEE SMC 2025 conference

IEEE SMC 2025, which will take place in Vienna from 5 to 8 October 2025, is one of the world's leading platforms for interdisciplinary exchange in the fields of cybernetics, human- machine interaction, and systems science and engineering. The conference's theme is "Navigating Frontiers: Smart Systems for a Dynamic World" and includes more than 2,100 submitted papers from around 60 countries, of which 1,200 have been accepted, keynotes, plenaries, tutorials, workshops, special sessions and a diverse supporting programme. In addition to scientific sessions, networking formats such as the reception at Vienna City Hall, the conference banquet and the BR41N.IO Hackathon are fixed points on the event calendar.
