With CirCon 2026 – Circular Construction, the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology has established a central platform for exchange on the circular construction industry. Around 120 representatives from politics, business, research, and civil society gathered today at the Vienna Museum to discuss concrete ways out of the linear construction industry and to highlight practical solutions for a resource-efficient transformation of the sector under the motto "Circular Construction – Opportunities. Innovation. Practice." to discuss concrete ways out of the linear construction industry and to identify practical solutions for a resource-efficient transformation of the sector.

From regulation to implementation: Circular economy as a systemic task

The conference focused on regulatory frameworks, industrial implementation paths, circular business models, and current research findings. Keynotes, panel discussions, and interactive formats made it clear that the transition to a circular economy in construction is technologically possible, but requires coordinated interaction between all relevant actors along the value chain.

Special attention was paid to the role of science and innovation as a bridge between political objectives and practical application. Short poster pitches offered compact insights into ongoing research and innovation projects and underscored the breadth of current activities in the field of circular construction.

“CirCon shows the contribution that research and innovation can make to putting material- and resource-efficient construction methods into practice,” said Andreas Kugi, Scientific Director of AIT. “Research lays the foundation for this by providing valid data, application-oriented tools, and integrated solutions that bring together regulation and industrial implementation.”
