The OpenFOAM Workshop, the world's most important annual meeting of the OpenFOAM community, will take place in Vienna from June 30 to July 4, 2025. The 20th edition will be hosted by the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, which is bringing together leading minds from science, industry, and software development for this anniversary event. The focus will be on the latest developments in the open-source software OpenFOAM®, innovative simulation techniques, and the future of computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

OpenFOAM (Open Field Operation and Manipulation) is a world-leading open-source software for numerical simulations in fluid mechanics and related fields. It is widely used in industry, research, and education – from energy and environmental engineering to automotive and aerospace applications, biomedical engineering, materials research, and chemical reactor simulations.

The workshop brings together users, developers, and researchers from around the world to discuss current developments, address technical challenges, and explore new applications.

Thematic focus of the 2025 workshop

The 20th OpenFOAM Workshop offers a diverse program that reflects the breadth and depth of the application possibilities. Thematic sessions include, among others:

  • Turbulence modeling and numerical methods
  • Multiphase flows and complex fluid dynamics
  • Heat transfer and thermodynamics
  • Chemical reaction kinetics and combustion processes
  • Flow in porous media
  • Coupling with structural mechanics and electromagnetics (multiphysics)
  • Data-driven models and AI in CFD
  • High-performance computing and cloud-based simulation
  • Industrial applications: automotive, aviation, energy, environment, biomedicine

In addition to technical talks and scientific presentations, there will be practical training sessions where beginners and advanced users alike can benefit from the experience of leading OpenFOAM experts. An extensive poster exhibition will round out the program and provide an opportunity for personal exchange.

Vienna as a stage for the international OpenFOAM community

"With the 20th OpenFOAM Workshop, we are bringing the international CFD community to Austria for the first time – and on a significant anniversary. We look forward to an intensive exchange of knowledge and experience with developers, researchers, and users from all over the world“, says Dr. Mirza Popovac, scientific coordinator of the workshop and member of the organizing committee at AIT.

Indispensable for technological transformation

”OpenFOAM embodies the potential of open, collaborative development models in technology. As host of the 20th workshop, we are delighted to contribute to the further development of high-performance and multiphysics simulations. OpenFOAM simulations are now an integral part of numerous research and development projects at AIT – from energy and environmental technology to mobility solutions and manufacturing and materials technologies. In this way, we are actively supporting the technological transformation toward sustainability and digitalization", emphasizes AIT Scientific Director Univ.-Prof. Dr. Andreas Kugi.

The workshop will take place at Tech Gate Vienna, in the immediate vicinity of Vienna's UNO City – an international location with state-of-the-art infrastructure. Vienna, repeatedly named the most livable city in the world, provides an impressive backdrop for this special anniversary event.
