The AI Factory Austria AI:AT has realised the first successful practical example of its support approach with the Viennese technology company Zenta Solutions: As the national contact point for high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI), it supported the company's smooth access to European supercomputing resources.

Austria as an active partner in the European AI network

The AI Factory Austria is part of the European AI Factories initiative, which is supported by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking and the Horizon Europe programme and promotes the establishment of networked, application-oriented AI infrastructures throughout Europe.

"The AI Factory Austria is an essential building block of the European AI Factories initiative. It not only represents a significant milestone in strengthening Austria's digital sovereignty, but also creates the basis for companies to benefit from the best European infrastructures. In this way, we want to drive forward digitalisation, improve the competitiveness of companies and make the key technology of AI available to as many start-ups as possible as a door opener for markets and new solutions," explains Innovation and Infrastructure Minister Peter Hanke.

First use case with Zenta Solutions
Zenta Solutions, a young spin-off from the Medical University of Vienna specialising in medical data analysis, is the first company to successfully implement access to the Leonardo EuroHPC system in Bologna, Italy, with the help of AI Factory Austria. AI-based processes for structuring and analysing medical data sets are currently being tested and optimised there.

"The first step is to completely anonymise the data. It is then analysed, contextualised and converted into a structured form using image-based AI models and large language models. This turns previously unstructured health data into valuable information that forms a solid basis for a wide range of further applications, such as predicting treatment response," says David Haberl from Zenta.

Zenta is focussing on the use of so-called open source models. These are open, freely accessible models that can be used entirely locally on the company's own systems and are independent of external cloud infrastructure. This ensures that sensitive health data remains on site at all times. "We are currently testing our methods on Leonardo using open data sets and realistically simulated sample data," adds Haberl.

Karl Kugler, Co-Lead of the AI Factory Austria, explains: "The AI Factory Austria acts as a one-stop shop. We combine technical consulting, computing resources, training and support in the safe application of AI. This helps companies to realise their data-driven projects faster and develop innovations from the idea to the implementation of new business models."

Thomas Beyer, Co-Founder of Zenta Solutions, reports: "Thanks to the AI Factory Austria, we were able to access the EuroHPC systems within a few days. Access works smoothly - we can test and further develop our models immediately without having to set up our own expensive infrastructure."

Markus Stöhr, Co-Lead of the AI Factory Austria and Project Manager at Advanced Computing Austria (ACA), adds: "With the AI Factory Austria, we are creating a central point of contact for access to high-performance computers and AI services in Europe. Our aim is to build a bridge between companies and research institutions - from scientific knowledge to practical application in business and society."

Focus on practice-orientated support
The AI Factory Austria is currently building up a comprehensive service portfolio step by step to make it easier for small and medium-sized companies in particular to access high-performance computing and AI applications. The focus is on practical support: from the selection of suitable systems and technical integration to the further development of data-based and AI-supported applications. This specifically promotes the efficient transfer of research results into industrial practice. With the current project, AI Factory Austria has achieved its first significant success in its start-up phase. At the same time, the range of services will be continuously expanded in order to support even more domestic companies in the field of AI in the future and open up the path to the European supercomputing ecosystem for them.

Thomas Mayerhofer, Head of Innovation Centre at AI Factory Austria, adds:
"Zenta Solutions' use case shows the difference targeted support can make in accessing European computing resources. We are already in contact with other companies that have similar needs - and are helping them to utilise the opportunities that are right for them within the AI Factory Austria and the European AI Factories network."
