Angela Sessitsch, Head of the Center for Health & Bioresources at the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, ranks among the Top 3 “Austrians of the Year” in the Research category. In the NINA project, AIT is working with partners to research new methods for diagnosing, assessing and conducting life cycle assessments of prestressed concrete bridges

Due to its topography, Austria has a dense network of bridge structures. Many of these structures have now been in operation for several decades and will reach the end of their normal service life in the next twenty years. At the same time, traffic volumes are increasing, and with them the number of load cycles to be endured. Prestressed concrete bridges are particularly affected: the tendons inside the concrete are susceptible to corrosion, cannot be inspected visually and therefore pose a safety risk. The challenge is twofold: on the one hand, existing structures must remain reliably usable for much longer, and on the other hand, sustainability issues are becoming increasingly important in bridge construction. The use of recycled concrete and clinker-reduced cements is considered promising, but has not yet been comprehensively investigated. This makes new diagnostic tools, prediction models and sustainability assessments indispensable.

New test benches enable realistic tests up to 100 kW heating capacity and strengthen Austria's role as a location for innovation in climate-neutral heating technologies.

On 13 October 2025, the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology officially opened Austria's most advanced heat pump laboratory, providing important impetus for the decarbonisation of the heating sector. High-tech test benches allow heat pump systems with a heating capacity of up to 100 kW to be tested under realistic conditions. The new laboratory offers customers from industry and partners from research ideal conditions for the development and optimisation of efficient systems. The AIT thus underlines its central role in the development of new technologies and strengthens the innovation ecosystem of research and industry in Austria.

The four-day conference is one of the world's leading platforms for interdisciplinary exchange in the fields of cybernetics, human-machine interaction, and systems science and engineering. The AIT Austrian Institute of Technology – together with Óbuda University (Budapest) – is an organisational partner and plays a key role in the scientific and strategic design of the conference. With over 2,100 submissions from around 60 countries, the conference in Vienna sets a new record in the history of IEEE SMC, which has been held annually at different international locations since 1971.

AIT Austrian Institute of Technology researches cycling skills for better road safety

The number of cycling accidents in Austria has increased significantly over the past ten years. Particularly striking is the rise in single-vehicle accidents, the causes of which are manifold – from lack of riding experience to distraction and inadequate infrastructure. To counteract these developments, the SARA research project – Safe Cycling at Any Age – is systematically investigating cycling skills in Austria for the first time. The aim of the project is to collect reliable data and use it to develop specific recommendations for training, awareness-raising and infrastructure.
